After a break of 3 years, I am indebted to pen down the memories shared with one of the greatest personalities I have ever met in my life. The person who happened to be my sole inspiration to start blogging (read: The Journey Begins).
Munich| Sunday|June 2, 2023| 16:20 – As I was scrolling through whatsapp messages on Sunday evening, I was shocked to see this devastating news of NC uncle. The same person who had been enlightening us with his routine motivational and spiritual notes each day is no more.

Let’s go back in time, I knew NC uncle and his family since my childhood as we lived in same residential area in Mumbai. Thats probably the same time NC uncle started his entrepreneurship journey with SSA business solutions and I got to witness the so-called startup environment. (To know more about NC uncle’s journey from IIT Madras graduate to entrepreneur, please refer NC’s journey). My first real interaction with him, was around age of 6/7 when I visited his home after participating in a piano music competition. Seeing my disappointment of not winning the competition, NC complimented me for the efforts to perform at such a small age and presented me a small prize token. As a look back, had it not been for this kind gesture from this gentleman, I probably wouldn’t have continued learning music and might not got the opportunity to teach this Legend at a later stage in my life.
Along with learning, I started teaching music to young kids in my neighbourhood from age of 11. The journey of teacher seemed to be smooth and easy until I met the real student. As penned by his own words below, I got the chance to teach NC uncle during my Class 12 vacations.

My first question to him was: Why do you want to learn music now? He said, as a kid he was always fond of music and wanted to play one, but the situation way back was not that great, and now with all time and apt environment at his disposal, he could finally try to pursue his childhood dream. So far in my teaching journey, I felt easy to train kids compared to elders, but NC uncle proved me wrong. With his sheer dedication and interest, NC uncle showed that age is just a number and one can pursue anything if they have the will. Unlike other students who were more interested in learning to play film movies, NC uncle was more interested in knowing the fundamentals of music and classical ragas, which helped him in attain the ultimate perfection. Being a tech savvy person, he integrated cool gadgets with keyboard and also upgraded them at regular intervals. This was evident from his range of keyboards starting with small Casio, then Yamaha and finally to 2 variants of Korg.

NC’s love for music was so unmatched that he would practise daily post work in the evenings and would happily perform the same for guests. I seriously admit that I was never ever near his dedication level. His interest in music also influenced others in his social circle and by his recommendation (which is very difficult to hear from him), I was able to connect to many more students, with one being his very own grandkid Arjun, and thus gaining a distinct honour of teaching both grandfather and grandchild at same time. At one point of time, I managed to take over 188 classes in a calendar year, after my undergrad lecture time in the evenings. Post my move to Germany in 2017, NC uncle followed Eklavya’s footprint and started mastering himself by sharing his music knowledge in the form of keyboard tutorials in Youtube. I was impressed with the presentation and editing efforts put by him all alone in those videos.

Along with the music classes, NC uncle used to share his experience, be it in day-to day life, academics and professional life. I learnt the lesson of punctuality and time keeping from him even before knowing its significance from Germany, albeit a hard way. Once, I happened to be late for the music class by 30mins and after reaching, he did cancel it. Since then, I have inculcated the habit of being at least 5 mins prior to all appointments. NC uncle also authored many books, which was truly motivational for young minds. Even being miles apart, he would never fail to share the author’s copy with me.

I could never believe this meeting towards end of last year 2022 would be last. In spite of him landing in Mumbai just 30mins back after an international business trip, the efforts to meet me speaks his humbleness and respect towards humanity.

Today being a Gurupournima day, I miss those yearly wishes and music tributes from my student NC uncle, who inadvertently became my Guru. After my appa’s one, NC uncle’s loss happens to be the third time I couldn’t control my tears following Paras patti (my Mumbai neighbour grandma) and Raj Advocate (appa’s friend) demises. All we could cherish is the wisdom and knowledge shared through his blogs, podcasts and a wonderful online Satsang community built by him.
